First ERA-Chemistry Call for Proposals sucessfully managed
ERA-Chemistry launched its first call for proposals in June 2005
on the topic
Hierarchically organised chemical structures: From molecules
to hybrid materials.
Based on suggestions from the scientific community a two-step
procedure with short pre-proposals and more detailed full proposals
was adopted. The call addressed primarily young researchers and
aimed to promote transnational collaborations by allowing groups
of two or three researchers from ERA-Chemistry consortium countries
to work together. Supported by all consortium partners, the call
was administrated by ERA-Chemistrys joint secretariat. A
committee of 15 top-level international scientists reviewed the
scientific merit of all proposals. Out of 82 pre-proposals 35
applicants were invited to submit full proposals. In December
2005 the nine best proposals were selected for funding. The successful
applicants include 22 chemists from 7 different countries. As
a result of this, a unique and easily accessible procedure was
put into place and completed within a record time of seven months.
The experience gained will be used to develop and organise more
and improved research subsidies. This will bring the ambitions
for the formation of a European Research Area (ERA) for chemistry
one step closer.

ERA-Chemistry
Since the beginning of 2004 the efforts of ten national research
councils and agencies to provide a framework for greater coherence
and coordination of research programmes across Europe in the field
of chemistry is funded within the ERA-NET programme of the EU.
The network has been granted M€ 1,4 for the first funding
period from 2004 to 2007. The aim of this network is to establish
the basis for a bottom-up European Area in curiosity-driven chemical
research without noticeable boundaries. This aim should be reached
by the development of simpler procedures for the applicants and
a quick, common procedure for the evaluation of joint international
applications.
ERA-Chemistry was initiated by administrative members of CERC3.
